The Blind Dog Sports Story

The name Blind Dog Sports comes from our family’s long time Cocker Spaniel, Shortstop.
“Shorty” has been with us since 1994. His AKC name is Yankees’ Pride Shortstop. He is the latest (and longest) in the line of Cockers that have been a part of our home.
Shorty grew up with our five children. Sadly, about five years ago, he developed cataracts and began to lose his vision. Because of retinal degeneration, he was not a candidate for surgery. Eventually, Shorty’s eyes developed glaucoma putting him in constant pain. We had his eyes removed three years ago and since then he has returned to his old playful, loving self.
Each day, when I do the Gene and Tony Show from my studio at home, Shorty makes his way down stairs and joins me for the two hours. Sometimes he will sit in my lap, but mostly he just sits on the floor listening to every word I say. He also knows that, on occasion, I have a treat or two waiting.
He has become a loving mascot to not only the Schiavone Family, but to my career. His blindness has not prevented him from being a loving dog and a joyful part of our home.
It’s is to his spirit and attitude that Blind Dog Sports was born.
